What is CSEC and Sex Trafficking?

Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC), also known as sex trafficking, is trading any sexual activity for anything of value. It sometimes involves:
  • Force: threatening or committing violence against you
  • Fraud: lying to you or tricking you
  • Coercion: harassing, intimidating, or emotionally manipulating you

Everyday Examples

Feeling obligated or pressured to do sexual acts for other people:
  • "Nudes" or sexually explicit photos or videos (porn)
  • Having sex or giving sexual favors in exchange for money, alcohol, or drugs
  • Having sex for food, clothing, a place to sleep
  • Having sex to help your boyfriend/girlfriend save money

Anyone Can be a Victim

They can be female, male, transgender, or gender non-conforming. There’s no shame in being a victim. If you are trying to help your friend, don’t do it alone. You don’t want to put yourself in danger by trying to help them. Connect them to resources instead.

Be Aware

A trafficker can be a stranger, a classmate, someone you know, or a family member. He or she might:
  • Message you via social media or online
  • Approach you at the mall, beach park, bus stop, parking lots, or on the street
  • Pose as your love interest
  • Blackmail you with your "nudes" or explicit photos
  • Manipulate you into feeling forced to do sexual acts to support/provide for your family

If you need help, tell someone.

This could be your teacher, school counselor, a trusted adult, or even your doctor. You can also contact any of the resources below.
